New Style Sessions for 2019

One of my goals last year was to launch the Style Sessions | Prop with a Pro™ workshops, and I’m happy to say they were a great success! From the enthusiasm of the attendees to the perfection of the venue, Elsie Green, I couldn’t have been more pleased with how these one-day styling workshops turned out. Our next Style Session will take place on Sunday April 14th, 2019 in California wine country - the perfect place for a girls getaway! If you’re excited to join us for the next one, we’re offering early bird pricing until Jan 15th. Click here reserve your space! In the meantime, here’s a recap of the experience and a teaser of what’s to come.

We began the day with coffee, morning snacks, and introductions. It was exciting to hear everyone’s creative and business goals. You may be pleasantly surprised to know that not everybody who attended worked in a creative field. I firmly believe that anybody can, and should be, encouraged to explore and nurture their creativity regardless of profession. You never know where it may lead!

After introductions, we dove straight into the lecture. I covered topics such as: how to find your own unique style, the best practices (and what to avoid) when it comes to prop styling, and the important compositional techniques you need to capture stunning visuals. The curriculum I’ve developed, through my years as a professional stylist, helps students learn actionable steps, that when implemented, will drastically improve their work. Often students recognize great styling when they see it, but can’t define the ‘how-to’ or the ‘why’ behind why it’s exceptional. During the lecture we touch on all those nuances and practice the steps to create it.

After the lecture, we took a break for a delicious catered lunch of salads, an assortment of local cheese and fresh bread, which we were able to serve on antique plates with glasses, silver cutlery, and linens pulled from the beautiful collection at Elsie Green.

In the afternoon, students split off on their own to put their newfound knowledge to use. I encouraged them to set up simple scenes and focus mostly on composition. One of the most amazing things about hosting the Style Sessions at Elsie Green is the incredible amount of stock that we were able to practice with. We essentially had a giant prop closet all to ourselves! Piles of silverware, plates, vessels, boxes, baskets, tin trays, wooden textures, rough linens… it was a dream, and so incredibly helpful for all the attendees.

With an entire store at our fingertips, I absolutely loved seeing what each person was drawn to and how they pulled a scene together. Some of the students set up autumnal vignettes, while others practiced composition with a collection of vases and vessels. During this time, I went around to each person to see if they were having any struggles and offer feedback, if needed. My ever helpful assistants were also available to offer guidance with camera-related questions.

The last and final part of the day was the Live Styling Demo. I set up my camera on a tripod, tethered it to my laptop, and we styled a table scene together, piece-by-piece. After each shot, we’d assess what worked and what didn’t, then alter whatever needed to be adjusted. Sometimes, an object needed to be shifted ever so slightly, or switched out for a different color or texture. These subtle refinements can seem tedious, but they are absolutely essential to nailing the perfect shot!
